San Diego is a haven for outdoor sports enthusiasts, including bikers. Here are three notable biking opportunities in the city.

Mission Beach-Pacific Beach. This 3.5-mile stretch goes through Mission Beach and Pacific Beach past bars, piers, and even an amusement park, Belmont Park, with its iconic Giant Dipper Roller Coaster. This stretch of boardwalk is off-limits to cars, but bikers still have access.

Pacific Coast Highway. Bikers can ride the Coaster train with their bikes up the highway, then pedal back from wherever they disembark. Riding south affords better beach views. The highway is also a short pedaling distance from towns such as Oceanside and Carlsbad, which are great for food stops.

Penasquito Canyon. From the trailhead north of the Border Bike Shop on Sorrento Valley Boulevard, bikers can ride eight miles of moderately difficult terrain through the canyon. Canyon wildlife includes bobcats, birds, and reptiles, and riders will also come upon stands of oak and sycamore, along with volcanic rocks. This route also includes a waterfall that flows year-round.
